SWAZILAND’S ILLEGAL PRIME MINISTER

People have been asking me why it is that I always refer to Barnabas Dlamini as Swaziland’s ‘illegally-appointed Prime Minister’.

Some of them seem to think that it is just me bad mouthing Dlamini to score a cheap political point.

Not so. Barnabas Dlamini is not a legitimate Prime Minister. Section 67 (i) of the Swaziland Constitution says ‘The King shall appoint the Prime Minister from among members of the House [of Assembly] acting upon the recommendation of the King’s Advisory Council.’

Barnabas Dlamini was not a member of the House of Assembly. He was not elected by anybody.

He was appointed to the House by King Mswati III, sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch, only so he could become the king’s Prime Minister.

Dlamini is not therefore legally Prime Minister.

Also, Dlamini allows himself to be called Doctor Dlamini when he has no such academic qualification. Click here for the explanation.
